How to Protect Your Dog and Family from Roundworms

Pack Leader | January 7th, 2009

pitbull bloodline

Nearly every puppy in the world is born with roundworms. This is because the roundwormâ??s larvae are transmitted from the mother to the puppy while it is still in the womb. A female dog can harbor roundworms in her tissue, often making them immune to dewormings. The roundworms then have the opportunity to emerge during pregnancy through the motherâ??s bloodstream and infect the unborn puppies. Roundworms can also be transmitted to newborn puppies through the motherâ??s milk during nursing.

Roundworms are also easily transmitted to humans. Young children are most susceptible because they are always sticking their fingers in their mouths! Roundworms are transmitted to humans and dogs through eggs that are in a dog or puppyâ??s stool. They can either be ingested through direct eating of the stool or by eating something else that has eaten the stool (the dog eats a bird, mouse, etc. that has eaten the dogâ??s stool).

Everyone should wash their hands frequently after handling the puppy or dog and make sure that all feces is removed from the yard and disposed of on a daily basis. Most infections in people are mild and cause no symptoms at all. However there have been cases of worms migrating to the liver, brain, and eyes.

Symptoms of roundworms in humans include:

â?¢ Anemia

â?¢ Appetite Loss

â?¢ Difficulty Breathing

â?¢ Constipation

â?¢ Cough

â?¢ Cramping

â?¢ Diarrhea

â?¢ Fever

â?¢ Hives

â?¢ Itching

â?¢ Nausea

â?¢ Chest Pain

â?¢ Muscle Pain

â?¢ Passing of Worms

â?¢ Rash

â?¢ Skin Lesions

â?¢ Swelling

â?¢ Vision Disturbances

â?¢ Vomiting

â?¢ Weight Loss

Infected puppies can become quite ill and heavy infestations may lead to convulsions and even death. Most puppies that die are around the age of two to three weeks old. Puppies should be wormed at ages 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age. Adult dogs should receive yearly stool samples from their veterinarian to check for worms. Roundworms will look like spaghetti in the puppyâ??s feces.

Symptoms of roundworms in dogs include:

â?¢ Potbelly

â?¢ Diarrhea

â?¢ Gas

â?¢ Vomiting

â?¢ Lack of Energy

â?¢ Slow Growth Rate

â?¢ Dull Coat

â?¢ Coughing (if immature roundworms have migrated to the puppyâ??s lungs)

Some dogs may show some or all of these symptoms while others may show no symptoms at all. When adult roundworms are seen in the dogâ??s stool this is often because of ongoing disease in the bowel or sometimes because the worm burden had become so great that the worms are crowding each other out.

Treatment of roundworms is not dangerous and is highly effective. Buy your wormers from the vet and give them regularly as instructed. The tablets are not difficult to give if you train your dog to take them in tiny bits of cheese or put them into sweets. The best way to protect your family and dogs from roundworms is through a regular program of both medication and prevention (keeping the yard clean of feces).

Street Fighting Moves - How to Defend a Child From a Pit Bull Dog Attack

Pack Leader | December 30th, 2008

blue pits com

First of all let me get the politics out of the way. You may be a dog lover to your dying day. And that’s fine. And I am sure that your little poodle Snuggles is the most adorable creature on the planet. However, in this article, I am purposely picking on ferocious and badly trained attack dogs by owners who reflect the bad attitudes of their animals. Sorry. I know first hand the tragedy, of a 2-year old being mauled in the face by an out of control and crazed animal. This not only includes pit bulls, but rottweilers, bulldogs and dobermans, just to name a few that can be trained to be attack dogs–attack dogs that can go wild. My purpose here is to give you some sort of a self defense plan where before reading this article you had none.

There are 6 critical moves that you must know in the split-second surprise of a crazed dog charging toward you, or worst still, attacking a young child.

The 6 Critical Moves That You Must Know To Defend A Child From A Ferocious Dog Attack

Critical Move #1 - Practice Situational Awareness - What this means is that you should try to avoid getting yourself in that situation in the first place. If you are walking with your child, and you notice that a pit bull or rottweiler in a yard as you pass has a very low fence in front of it, and the rottweiler seems to be leaping higher and higher over the fence, it is time to consider crossing the street and walking on the other side. Sometimes yard dogs manage to leap over short fences if they try hard enough. When you cross the street, they will usually stop barking.

Critical Move #2 - If You Suspect A Dog May Get Loose, Take Out Your Weapons - (Pepper Spray)- Just in case, always be ready. It is a good habit as a self defense conscious person to always have pepper spray as part of your car keys. Whenever you suspect imminent danger be it animal or Homo Sapiens, take out your car keys with your pepper ready in your hand. Postal workers have to deal with dog attacks on a regular daily basis, and more than one postal worker has told me that his pepper spray has save his hide on many occasions.

Critical Move #3 - Direct And Move The Child To Atop The Nearest Car - It is a good idea to practice this maneuver a few times at home with your own car and with your child to know what to do in case of an emergency. Do your best to follow your child to the top of the car. The dog’s foot pads and paws tend to slip on the smooth surface of a car as it attempts to climb just as the family dog, when it suddenly bolts in, will slide uncontrollably across the waxed linoleum floor of the kitchen.

Critical Move #4 - If You See A Child Already Being Attacked By A Dog, Grab The Dog’s Hind Legs From Behind - If for some reason you find yourself witnessing a helpless child in the midst of a vicious dog attack, act quickly by grabbing the dogs hind legs from behind and then lift them up and out, the same way that you would break a wishbone while moving backwards, and–front kick it– with a continuous fury under its testicles, and keep kicking–again and again until it lets go. Depending on your angle and distance, some of your kicks may be with the front of your foot, with your toes curled upward, or you may need to knee it in the testicles–again and again.

Critical Move #5 - Depending On Your Position, Kick The Dog Hard, In Its Side Or Under The Thorax Until It Releases The Child - If you are where you can front kick to the ribs of the animal, then do so, and do so vigorously and without prejudice. Another good spot to attack is the thorax of the dog. The anatomy of a dog’s neck is long, and spot where you want to strike is where the neck meets the chest because there is very little padding there. Aside from the pain the dog will feel, it can set off a cough reflex which is what you want. If the dog suddenly charges you, lift your knee up into his sternum; it doesn’t require lightning reflexes, and it will usually work to knock the dog back on the ground. This may give you time to make it to the top of a car.

Critical Move # 6 - If The Dog Will Not Release The Child And If It Is On Top–Choke The Dog Out - This is a jiu jitsu move. Try not to straddle the dog, but get to either side of it, and with, say, your left hand grabbing a clump of its scalp to stabilize the head, move your right forearm under the neck, and with the boney part of the forearm, pull it back into the throat with the right forearm while simultaneously pushing its head down with your left hand. You are putting pressure against the windpipe and it should be held for at least 30 seconds until the dog is unconscious and has stopped struggling.

The Real Scoop on Pitbulls

Pack Leader | December 29th, 2008

pitbull mp3

There are many horror stories out there that involve pit bull attacks. I mean they are breed to kill, right? Well, that is wrong. I want to educate people on this incredible, loving and smart breed of dog. It just breaks my heart to see that some cities are, actually banning this breed of dog.

Did you know that pit bulls were, actually breed to be nannies? Yes, they were breed to watch over children. In the 1940’s and 50’s they were referred to as “the nannies of America”. After all The Little Rascals had a pit bull and so did Helen Keller. Pit bulls were once loved family pets. The truth is that any dog can be an aggressive dog. Labs, Terriers and Retrievers are all on record for biting. So why is it that only Pit bulls are publicized for this? I believe it’s because no one wants to ruin the “good dog” reputation of these other breeds. There are thousands of pit bull breeds running around in America and when there are that many dogs there are bound to be bites. The truth is that statistically American Pit bulls are the least likely breed to bite.

Many famous people own pit bulls, as well. Like, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, General George Patton, Helen Keller, Jamie Foxx, Rachael Ray, Jon Stewart, Ken Howard, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Kevin Federline and Pink.

Not to mention there are many pit bulls that are famous themselves. Like, Sergeant Stubby, he is the most decorated dog in military history, and the only dog to have been promoted during battle. He fought for 18 months in the trenches of France during WW1 for 17 battles. He warned his fellow soldiers of gas attacks, located wounded soldiers, and listened for oncoming artillery rounds. He was even responsible for the capture of a German spy.

Pit Bull Training - The American Pit Bull Terrier

Pack Leader | December 24th, 2008

puppies for sale

The American Pit Bull Terrier, sometimes just called Pit Bull, is one of the most misunderstood breeds on the planet. Portrayed in the media as a vicious and dangerous dog the truth is almost always the opposite.

During its origins the Pit Bull was known as the ‘Nanny Dog’ due to its renowned ability with being gentle with children. It has only been in recent decades that this dog has been maligned due to dog fighting and other inhumane practices.

The Pit Bull comes in many varieties including the Blue Nose and Red Nose and many different sizes. Regardless of the variety most Pit Bulls are known for their athleticism and strong desire to work. Nowadays this breed can be found working in French Ring, Schutzhund, hog catching, weight pull, obedience, agility, and even some are found amongst the ranks of police dogs. It is due to extreme intelligence and athletic ability that allows this wonderful breed to excel at so many activities.

When looking for Pit Bull puppies for sale it is important to only visit reputable breeders or shelters. Many unscrupulous breeders hope to cash in on the popularity of the breed and only make money off the reputation. It is the true breeder that is focused on improving the breed and producing true ambassadors to a wonderful breed.

Most Pit Bulls take quickly to training and are eager to please their master. Early socialization is a must as it is important that this dog learn to like other members of the dog and human world from a young age.

By finding a respected breeder and engaging in solid socialization and training you will find your Pit Bull to be very well behaved.

Pitbull Puppies - In Great Demand

Pack Leader | December 23rd, 2008

pitbull wiki

Pitbull puppies are in great demand these days. They come in a wide variety of colors including, grey, white, black, silver or merle and are often bought at whopping prices in the market. There are also puppies showing certain distinct features which are even more in demand these days. Good examples would be the puppies which come with red noses or red nosed pitbulls.

Pitbull puppies, just as in the case with other pets, need to be taken care off in the proper manner. Adopting these dogs right at the puppy stage is in fact the best thing to do for it would help in the puppy becoming more loyal to its master. There are many instances when people have bought pitbulls when they are quite old and therefore not able to train them to be more subdued. In fact this is one reason why there is a misconception prevailing among many that these dogs are aggressive. Truth to speak, these dogs are not prone to becoming aggressive, if they are trained right from the puppy stage.

Consistent training is the key with pitbull puppies. These dogs are known for their high levels of energy and therefore need a plenty of exercise. You can try and devise certain exercises for them like tying a ball and dragging it around so that the puppies chase them. Such simple exercises and activities can go a long way in subduing their aggressive nature, apart from giving them the necessary workout. You must also not confine them to their kennels for long durations of time. This is so because these puppies are known to have weak bladders which need them to be taken out quite frequently.

Training also creates a stronger bonding between the owner and the puppies. This is one more reason why you should adopt these dogs at the puppy stage. This is where these puppies score over adult pitbulls which may not respond so to training. Training them at a young age makes also makes them respond to various verbal commands. They could be easily made to understand commands such as ‘fetch ‘and ‘go’ at the puppy stage.

You also need to take certain precautionary measures if you are keen on pitbull puppies. For one these puppies have a prolonged teething period during which they will chew literally anything they can get hold on. It is for this reason that you should make it a point to keep children out of the reach of these puppies. Once you take care of all these aspects, these puppies can make for great pets.

Pet Collars - There Are Many Styles

Pack Leader | December 22nd, 2008

blue pitbull

You may have checked out many different pet collars for your beloved furry friend. You noticed that there are many different styles to choose from and the materials vary widely as well. These collars have many uses for your pet, including their identity, their safety, and sometimes, just for style.

Depending on the type of animal you have, will determine the size and the material for the one your pet needs. They come in various sizes, and the materials ranging from plastic, leather, to even chain link. You can be decorative and try to give your pet some style or use the basic plain ones that just offer usefulness and no added flair.

Cat Collars

You cat will need one to display their tags; you want to ensure that if fluffy gets lost, your address is displayed and he can be returned to you safely. There really is no need for a leash to be attached to the one for your cat, as I have not seen many cats that are willing to be walked.

You would want to find a thinner option for your kitty, the material is non important as there is no need for restraint. Most people buy pet collars for their cats, just for the he decorative appeal. The cat may not like wearing a pink one with a princess crown on it, but without thumbs, he is helpless and can not stop you from displaying that he is your little princess.

Dog Collars

The pet collars for dogs have different uses than those of the feline. Dogs will need walked, restrained, and sometimes trained with them. Small to medium size dogs that remain mostly in the house can have cloth, or plastic ones without worries of them snapping them when on a walk. You want to make sure the dogs tags are attached so if he is out or gets lost, he can be returned to you safely.

Larger dogs will need to have thicker ones, made of leather or chains. You want to be bale to restrain the dog if he becomes overly excited during a walk. If you run in to another dog and the one your pet has is too weak, you may risk injury to yours or another’s dog.

There are choker pet collars for your dog as well, these are used in training. You may have an overly excitable dog that needs to be restrained more than once or twice during a walk. The choker ones are designed to add pressure on the dog as he strains and pulls against you, eventually training him to be more obedient and calm during an encounter with another person or animal.

The ones for large dogs can be very stylish as well, you can go for the brute look and have spikes on a leather one, or turn your pit bull in to a pretty princess, just like the smaller dogs and even the cats. Whatever pet collars you decide to purchase that fit your needs, always attach the tags on to it, to ensure your pet is always returned to you in the event of them getting lost.

Reasons Why Pit Bulls Are Believed to Attack People

Pack Leader | December 18th, 2008

bull terrier

The number one underlining reason Pitt Bull attacks have escalated is because people are irresponsible and ignorant.

But, it must also be said that the nature of the breed is to fight and to attack.

Some people teach their dogs to be mean by depriving them of essential substances and are deliberately, physically, verbally and emotionally abusive towards their animal or animals.

Cruelness and irresponsibility are two contributing factors that are closely followed by some people’s lack of responsibility and ethical character. Their own actions precipitate the growth of puppy mills which leads to inferior genetic inbreeding.

How unfortunate that a person would deliberately use their own viciously “trained” dog to baby-sit their own child in a self-contained space. This perverted judgmental individual went shopping, knowing full well that the dog she had just sequestered with her son was her own “attack dog.” The tragic result was that he own son paid the ultimate price with the loss of his life.

Meanness breeds meanness and hatred. Teasing and tormenting teaches any living creature to mistrust, retaliation, and to contemplate ill doings.

It takes a patient, “informed an enlightened” adult led household, to teach the younger people of the family, about the history and breeding characteristics, of this specimen of canine animal.

During the early 1980’s the “APBT” American Pit Bull Terrier was recruited and bred heavily for the purpose of monetary gain. Many of the (dreads) of society, out of greed and maligned ignorance, have created and exploited these animals, specifically for the purpose of human aggression.

Yet, these same nefarious individuals do not know the difference between an (AST) American Staffordshire Terrier and the (APBT) American Pit Bull Terrier.

In conclusion, should you be in the market for an American Pit Bull Terrier of “true pedigree”, then start your search by finding a breeder of national reputation, check out the advertising in the American Pit Bull Terrier Gazette, and contact the “American Canine Temperament Testing Association”, and have the animal of your interest tested.

The American Canine Temperament Testing Association concludes that 95% of all American Pit Bull Terrier’s acquired from a reputable breeder, pass this test, compared with a 77% passing score for all breeds on average. APBT’S ranked fourth among all breeds tested, according to the people of the “American Canine Temperament Testing Association.”

There are security products available should you encounter a situation where an animal wishes to be combative and “attack minded.” The EPA has approved MACE MUZZLE as a safe, effective and humane protection against canine attack. MACE MUZZLE is an ideal protection device for walkers, joggers, cyclists or delivery people. A Velcro-like attachment can secure this unit to a bike or car. This unit has a flip-top safety cap, finger-grip dispenser, belt clip and key chain for convenient carry.

Is Cesar Millan the Gay Communities “SuperNanny”?

Pack Leader | December 7th, 2008

pitbull chat

Taking on the ”dog whisperer”

OK, I admit, I’ve gotten sucked into episodes of ”The Dog Whisperer” and been intrigued by Cesar Millan’s magic with canines. The guy’s likable enough, and he’s an animal lover (I presume), so I give him points for that. And I’ve even tried his training methods (sort of) with my dopey but headstrong Rottweiler. But for some reason I’m not completely sold. The skeptic in me says that this Mexican guy hit the jackpot one day when he realized he could make a buck by convincing desperate shitzu/pitbull/goldendoodle/shepherd owners that he could rehabilitate their growly, ill-behaved terrors.

You see, I don’t quite get how the whole thing works. Have you seen the show? If not, basically Cesar is summoned to the home of an exasperated (and often illiterate) dog owner who has allowed her pet to run her life. Naturally they show film footage of the dog at its worst, perhaps barking viciously at the mailman or devouring the neighbor’s kitty. The dog, it seems, is a lost cause. But have faith! Cesar Millan has arrived! And within the course of a visit, it seems, he has squashed the offending animal’s spirit and cast his odd spell on it. And all it took was a few strong yanks of the leash accompanied by an odd ”SSSTT!” sound! Plu-eeeze. Now, obviously Cesar is a trained, accomplished animal behaviorist, and his methods seem to work… somehow. But even I know that rehabilitating a wayward animal takes more than a few leash tugs and some strange nonhuman verbal cue.

There must be more that they’re not showing us. Like when that evil Chow nipped two of Cesar’s fingers off and he lobotomized it afterward; or when they performed vocal chord surgery on that yappy terrier. Suppose that’s not suitable family viewing. My other major problem with Cesar is that he insists on treating these dogs like…. like, well, dogs! He frowns on allowing them on the furniture… he discourages ”baby talking” to them… he insists they don’t share our food…. and, worst of all, he bans them from his bedroom. Huh? If I didn’t have my dog to snuggle with each night, who would keep me warm and toasty (suppose my partner could… but let’s keep her out of this).

Anyway, my point is, Cesar doesn’t approve of assigning human qualities to our dogs. Don’t ask me why. I’ve had dogs that are more human than, well, some humans I know! They’ve certainly exhibited more feelings and emotions than those humans, and more loyalty, and more devotion, and more consistency, and more love. Anyway, those are my problems with Cesar. Of course, if Mr. Millan were to show up at my doorstep one day, I’d invite him in. In fact, I might even ask him about this barking problem I’m having with one of my dogs, and this aggression problem I’m having with another. Oh, and maybe he could help me sort out why my little boxer insists on picking on big dogs that can devour her in one bite. Ahh, who am I kidding. I could use Cesar’s advice, and I’m in awe at his magic touch with animals. I love his show, and I try to follow his advice. In fact, I wish I could communicate with dogs as well as he can. The bottom line, you see, is this: I’m jealous.
