pitbull dogs

Pit Bulls can be termed as America’s most-loved as well as most-feared dogs at the same time. American homes have always had pit bulls as worthy affectionate pets, but a series of mauling incidents over the years have created paranoia about this dog breed all over the nation.

The term ‘Pit Bull’ is a term referring to three breeds of dogs: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Their combinations are also called as Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls were originally from England. The American Pit Bull Terrier was imported to America from England in the 19th century. Out of all the Pit Bull breeds, the American Staffordshire Terrier, simply called as the AmStaff is a descendent of the English bulldog, which was specifically raised for fighting. All Pit Bulls are characterized by their short stocky but strong bodies. They have wide mouths with long hanging tongues.

Pit Bulls are considered to be the most athletic dogs in the world. They are descendents of the bear and bull fighting dogs used by cowboys in the past. Pit Bulls can hold a bull by biting it on the nose and hence the term ‘to take a bull by its nose’. However, Pit Bulls are also considered to be very affectionate towards children. Various families that own Pit Bulls swear that pit bulls are the best breed of dogs around children and they take an instant and instinctive liking towards them.

Pit Bulls are temperamentally aggressive dogs. Some kennels breed the dogs for dogfights, which are still conducted in spite of the fact that such fights are illegal. Even an ordinary Pit Bull wouldn’t flinch to attack other dogs and sometimes even people if left loose. Several Pit Bulls at the kennels bear scars, which indicate that they may have been involved in scrapes in the past.

Due to their ferocity and violent disposition, Pit Bulls are being banned from various cities and states, Ontario in Canada being one of them. The remnants of them are being spayed, neutered and also treated with euthanasia. Undoubtedly, this has created a furor among dog lovers all over.

Dog lovers condemn the mercilessness of the way in which Pit Bulls are being treated. They maintain that Pit Bulls are just as aggressive as other dogs, and in the midst of caring and loving owners, they become so mellow that they even be placed with toddlers without worry. The problem lies with the owner, not the dog. Pit Bulls who are uncared for and bred poorly often become vicious. Also a single act by some Pit Bull does not speak for the whole breed. Pit Bull lovers are trying their best to save the Pit Bulls via signature campaigns and slogans like â??Punish the deed; not the breed.â?

Pit Bulls have become the center of a tug-of-war between the authorities and animal lovers. Once a most amiable and well-loved breed, today it is looked upon as a monster by many. The future of the breed, which was once it’s most-loved remains enveloped in doubt.

Pit Bull Training For Responsible Ownership

Pack Leader | January 28th, 2009

pitbull history

Owning a pitbull requires a big responsibility. For one, pitbull training is very important. It’s necessary for pitbull owners to do this because there have been many reports on Pitbulls attacking people or children with no reason at all. Dog owners should not stay ignorant especially when they have pitbulls under their care. In reality, the pitbull is one of the most behaved dogs on the list of breeds according to disposition or attack frequencies. Training a pitbull properly will spare the dog from attacking people. If the owner is irresponsible, the pitbull will more likely cause harm to others.

It is sad to know that there are many irresponsible owners who take pride in flaunting their fierce dog. Unluckily some of these irresponsible owners end up as the victim of their own pet. Pitbulls can actually be safe with children if you keep an eye on how your dog interacts with kids around. However, this does not mean that you have to be complacent by leaving children alone with a pitbull. You still have to keep your presence among them. Knowing how to discipline a pitbull at a very young age is very important. It is necessary that pitbull puppies socialize with other dogs even at a young age.

This is in contrast to the myth that pitbull puppies must be isolated from people or other animals. Pitbulls are actually sociable dogs contrary to the negative impressions of people on their breed. Only that many dog owners who attempt to train pitbulls fail due to lack of consistency, discipline, and timing. The latter is said to be the most important of the three. Furthermore, if you lack knowledge in the implementation of positive reinforcement on dogs, it may also lead to your failure to train a pitbull. Pitbull puppies that were not exposed to the public well have greater tendencies of attacking people or animals when they grow older.

Thus, it would be better to bring your pitbulls in places such as parks. It surely is very helpful that dog owners read guide to pitbulls prior to owning one. This way they will know their responsibilities towards their dog. Irresponsible ownership of pit bulls can cause danger to other people or even death to its victims. Pitbull puppy training can be fun and rewarding. It is in the nature of pitbulls that when they are comfortable to their environment and the people around them, they become more loving. If a pitbull gets the right training, it can contribute to their healthy development.

Aside from its health benefits, they become a more behaved and trustworthy dogs. Training your pitbull to be a protector instead of being a fiend can work so much to your benefit. Trained pitbulls can actually protect you from dangers that may happen to you like robbery or kidnapping. It is only a sad fact that pitbulls are viewed negatively in the public eye. Pitbull training is a long process. Just stick to the basic rules by reinforcing the dog’s desirable behavior and ignoring the undesirable behaviors. Surely you will have a happy and harmonious life together with your pitbull.

Dog Health Tips - Care For Your Pets at Home

Pack Leader | January 27th, 2009

pitbull breedings

Everyone with pets, whether dogs or puppies, needs to have a veterinary surgeon to turn to in an emergency. They do a wonderful job, and you should never ignore a petâ??s suffering. However, it is a waste of money to attend the Vetâ??s surgery when the problem is one you can solve at home. This is a short guide to dealing with minor ailments as a form of Petsâ?? First Aid. If the symptoms persist you can still contact the vet. Dog health need not always be a costly worry to the wise pet owner.

Some dog breeds do not like being handled: pitbull dogs and bull terriers for example. This should be key element of dog obedience training so that the dog accepts that you are entitled to treat him for his own good. After a country walk it is a good idea to give your dog a quick grooming or rub down, and check for any lumps or bumps that he may have picked up along the way. My own dog, a Collie â?” German Shepherd cross, gets twigs and sticks caught in round his rear and his bushy tail. Left unchecked, these can cause the fur to mat around them. The dog will worry at it and probably lick the area bare, leaving it open to infection. You can avoid this with a few minutesâ?? attention.

Ticks are nasty. They have a one-piece body and the harpoon-like mouth barbs attach to a host (your dog) for feeding. Crablike legs and a sticky secretion help the tick to hold on. Long-haired dogs like Schnauzers often suffer badly from ticks. When attempting to remove a tick, the aim is to prevent the mouth section from coming off and remaining embedded in the skin. The home remedy is simple and cheap â?” petroleum jelly, which is what you would get if you went to a pet shop and paid for a proprietary tick remover! The most effective way to remove the tick is to put a big lump of petroleum jelly over the area where it has attached itself. Leave this for at least ten minutes. Once the tickâ??s grip loosens, you can wipe it out of the way with a tissue.

Ear mites - if your pet has ear mites, then place two drops of corn oil into its ears (an eye dropper will do the trick), massage the ear gently then clean with a cotton ball. This will suffocate the mites. Repeat for 3 days. Regular ear bathing with oil is recommended by vets, to avoid a buildup of wax and irritants.

Constipation - try this quick fix for a constipated pet. For a large dog, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of mineral oil to its food. For a small dog reduce the dose to 1 to 2 teaspoons. Do this for two days and the problem should clear up.

Diarrhoea â?” mix one heaped teaspoon of carob powder with a little water and mix into your dogâ??s dinner. Use half a teaspoon if you have a puppy.

Urinary tract infections â?” mix 30-40ml of cranberry juice into your petâ??s food. This will boost the acidity of its urine, reduce bacteria and help relieve the discomfort.

And if youâ??re not sure whatâ??s wrong â?” say your pet seems â??off colourâ?? â?” then hereâ??s a tip we use all the time. Add half a dissolved aspirin or childrenâ??s liquid analgesic to your petâ??s food. It can perk up a German Shepherd in minutes!

Supplements for Pitbulls

Pack Leader | January 26th, 2009

free pitbulls

So you’ve found this article and you want it to give you some guidance as to the effectiveness and healthfulness of giving supplements for pitbulls. It is, if nothing else, very interesting debates because there are people that are on both sides of the fence for, as well as against the supplements for pitbulls. There are many myths and fables that surround this controversial issue however with this article, we will try to put some of that to rest. There is an overall theme by pro supplemental users as well as those who oppose it and the general theme is in your goal in giving supplements to pitbulls, just be responsible.

The Myth Surrounding Supplements for Pitbulls

Many people who are ignorant in the way of pitbulls and believe they should be banned do not quite understand or embrace this rare animal. It is a dog and there is no proof of this dog attacking more young children or adults than any other breed of dog. This is one myth that should be put to rest or intensely studied to discover the truths surrounding it. However, the supplements for pitbulls are often cause for alarm because they have been picked up and used against owners in the mistreatment of pitbulls. This is because there are many owners who will give the pitbull the equivalent of steroids to pump him up as many people use the pitbulls in weight pulling and want the dog beefed up and extremely strong.

Steroids in pitbulls have the same terrible effect that they have on humans and cause many anger as well as behavioral problems. Dogs, like humans are not trustworthy when they are on this type of powerful body and mind-altering drug however, when supplements for pitbulls are used properly and there is no mixture of steroids, the supplement usually consists of vitamins and creatine. The cheap dog foods don’t provide, much like our human food, the proper nutrition for a dog and therefore supplements for pitbulls can provide what the standard diet doesn’t.

Supplements for Pitbulls: Yes?

Supplements for pitbulls have shown dramatic increase in the joints and bones of these dogs as well as mentioned above, adding needed nutritional value to the meals that are generally missing from the regular dog food diet such as kibbles. There is a huge problem with today’s food for humans and dogs in that the manufacturers are adding more chemicals and preservatives and in the way there are many nutritional factors that are lost and rendered useless in the foods containing so many additives. Supplements for pitbulls should be used especially if you are feeding grocery store brand dog foods.

How to Train a Pitbull - 3 Keys to Training Pitbulls

Pack Leader | January 25th, 2009

Learning how to train a Pitbull is essential for any Pitbull owner who wants a dog who wants a sociable, well adjusted, companion. Pitbulls are, by nature, faithful and loving pets. However, because of their size, strength and reputation, certain steps must be taken in the training process to ensure success.

1) Start The Training Process As Early As Possible

We made the mistake of waiting until our Pitbull was almost an adult to begin learning how to train a Pitbull.

BAD mistake! At that point, “Rocco” was almost 70 lbs, and had developed many undesirable habits and behaviors. He was very difficult to control, strong willed, and nasty to other dogs. We soon discovered that the old adage, “you can’t teach old dogs new tricks”, was indeed the truth. We eventually did train “Rocco”, but only after we received professional guidance from an expert. It is possible to begin training with one word commands as early as 9-10 weeks. More advanced training has to wait until 5-6 months. Before that time, the chances are that your Pitbull will not have an appropriate attention span.

2) Obtain Your Pitbull From A Reputable Breeder

To obtain a Pitbull from any source that cannot be researched can be a risky proposition. When we were learning how to train a Pitbull, we discovered that a Pitbull with the proper temperment makes the job MUCH easier. With a reputable breeder, it is often times possible to meet your puppy’s litter mates and at least one of the parents. You can then observe the temperments of Pitbulls in your puppy’s bloodline. While temperments do vary, it will at least give you an idea of what you may possibly expect from your puppy,

3. Begin Socialization At An Early Age

Introduce your Pitbull puppy to as many social situations as possible at an early age. Pitbulls are great with humans, not so friendly to other dogs. For this reason, taking your puppy to places where other dogs congregate can be helpful. Dog parks, for example, can be excellent places for your Pitbull puppy to get used to other dogs. Socialization is part of how to train a Pitbull.

My wife Laura and I had almost given up trying to train “Rocco”. He was fast becoming very obnoxious and hard to live with. We tried ALL kinds of training techniques, followed other Pitbull owner’s advice, NOTHING worked! Finally, when we were two steps from putting Rocco up for adoption, a “light bulb” went off and we learned How To Train A Pitbull.

How to Train Your Small Breed Dog

Pack Leader | January 24th, 2009

Positive rewards techniques can be used for many types of dog training. In fact this technique is used to train some of the hardest working and most dependable dog breeds, such as police dogs and military dogs. This sensitive training is also used to train dogs who work on TV and in film. And it is also an effective way to teach your small breed dog basic house rules.

The positive rewards technique is simple. When your dog does something you approve of, you reward them with positive reinforcement; including lots of love and affection as well as with dog treats.

Using a pocket full of treats and having lots of loving affection ready to shower on your dog is an excellent way to teach simple training commands, such as ´sit´, ´stay´ and ´come.

Your dog lives to please you. Hes trying desperately to figure out what you like and what makes you happy. As soon as he makes the connection with what you are saying and what he is supposed to do, he will do it so that he can enjoy the love and affection you give him.

Your small breed dog is more likely to be not only more sensitive than a large breed dog, but is also more likely to be more anxious and nervous about being harmed. This fear can sometimes translate into aggressive behavior in the small breed dog. This is why it is imperative that the small breed dog owner instill confidence in the dog that the owner is not only dominant and in control, but is also going to protect the dog from harm.

A small breed dog is more nervous around small children or crowds of people because it is the dogs natural defense mechanism to want to protect its tiny frame from the harm of lots of feet or rough play.

Your small breed dog should be properly socialized from the time that he is a puppy so that he is used to being around other people and other animals. A small breed dog may think of himself as a pit bull. He can sometimes think that it is his job to protect you from harm. Make sure you teach your dog, early on, that you are in control and are not in need of his protection.

Pit Bull Terriers: What are the Best Dog Toys?

Pack Leader | January 22nd, 2009

pitbull gifts

It is important to provide your Pit Bull with toys that are safe for him. Due to the strength and aggression that Pit Bulls naturally have, it is often hard for owners to find suitable toys that are strong enough to hold up to the dog. Many Pit Bulls are also hard to please when it comes to toys, they want just the right size, shape, and texture, or they wonâ??t have anything to do with it. Purchasing toys that are Pit Bull suitable can get expensive, but can often help prevent your Pit Bull from chewing up your belongings.

Many Pit Bull owners prefer a toy called the Galileo Bone. It is produced by Nylabone, and proves to be able to hold up pretty well with the average Pit Bull. AT least, it lasts long enough to kind of make you feel like you have gotten your moneyâ??s worth. Nylabone also makes the Crazy Ball, which is also a really tough toy designed for Pit Bulls.

Kong toys can in many different sizes and colors, and many can be stuffed with your Pit Bullâ??s favorite treats. They have tremendous durability, so are especially great for Pit Bulls that like to chew a lot. Most Pit Bulls will occupy themselves for hours with these toys.

Many companies also produce interactive toys, some of which are tough enough to withstand your Pit Bull. These toys hold his interest with sounds and lights, usually good for a few hours of play before he gets bored with it.

Plush toys are also good for some Pit Bulls, it is important to make sure that you purchase one that doesnâ??t have small parts that could easily be chewed off and swallowed. These are probably toys that you would want to supervise your Pit Bull playing with, or use them to just play fetch with.

Rope toys can soon become a favorite for you both. They help to clean your Pit Bullâ??s teeth, and can be great for fetch. They work well for getting you involved in your Pit Bullâ??s play, as they work great for tug of war matches. It is important to keep in mind when pulling that you need to be careful not to pull too hard, as you may accidentally break one of your Pit Bullâ??s teeth.

Balls are popular with almost any dog, again the important thing here is to purchase one that is made of material durable enough to hold up to your Pit Bull. Larger balls will probably work better, as they will be harder for him to get in his mouth.

Toys are a necessity for your Pit Bull. Just keep in mind your Pit Bullâ??s personality and strength, so that you can buy the best toy for him. There are several sites online that sell toys suited for Pit Bulls, or your local pet supply may have them as well.

How to Protect Your Dog and Family from Roundworms

Pack Leader | January 21st, 2009

pitbull culo

Nearly every puppy in the world is born with roundworms. This is because the roundwormâ??s larvae are transmitted from the mother to the puppy while it is still in the womb. A female dog can harbor roundworms in her tissue, often making them immune to dewormings. The roundworms then have the opportunity to emerge during pregnancy through the motherâ??s bloodstream and infect the unborn puppies. Roundworms can also be transmitted to newborn puppies through the motherâ??s milk during nursing.

Roundworms are also easily transmitted to humans. Young children are most susceptible because they are always sticking their fingers in their mouths! Roundworms are transmitted to humans and dogs through eggs that are in a dog or puppyâ??s stool. They can either be ingested through direct eating of the stool or by eating something else that has eaten the stool (the dog eats a bird, mouse, etc. that has eaten the dogâ??s stool).

Everyone should wash their hands frequently after handling the puppy or dog and make sure that all feces is removed from the yard and disposed of on a daily basis. Most infections in people are mild and cause no symptoms at all. However there have been cases of worms migrating to the liver, brain, and eyes.

Symptoms of roundworms in humans include:

â?¢ Anemia

â?¢ Appetite Loss

â?¢ Difficulty Breathing

â?¢ Constipation

â?¢ Cough

â?¢ Cramping

â?¢ Diarrhea

â?¢ Fever

â?¢ Hives

â?¢ Itching

â?¢ Nausea

â?¢ Chest Pain

â?¢ Muscle Pain

â?¢ Passing of Worms

â?¢ Rash

â?¢ Skin Lesions

â?¢ Swelling

â?¢ Vision Disturbances

â?¢ Vomiting

â?¢ Weight Loss

Infected puppies can become quite ill and heavy infestations may lead to convulsions and even death. Most puppies that die are around the age of two to three weeks old. Puppies should be wormed at ages 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age. Adult dogs should receive yearly stool samples from their veterinarian to check for worms. Roundworms will look like spaghetti in the puppyâ??s feces.

Symptoms of roundworms in dogs include:

â?¢ Potbelly

â?¢ Diarrhea

â?¢ Gas

â?¢ Vomiting

â?¢ Lack of Energy

â?¢ Slow Growth Rate

â?¢ Dull Coat

â?¢ Coughing (if immature roundworms have migrated to the puppyâ??s lungs)

Some dogs may show some or all of these symptoms while others may show no symptoms at all. When adult roundworms are seen in the dogâ??s stool this is often because of ongoing disease in the bowel or sometimes because the worm burden had become so great that the worms are crowding each other out.

Treatment of roundworms is not dangerous and is highly effective. Buy your wormers from the vet and give them regularly as instructed. The tablets are not difficult to give if you train your dog to take them in tiny bits of cheese or put them into sweets. The best way to protect your family and dogs from roundworms is through a regular program of both medication and prevention (keeping the yard clean of feces).

The Real Scoop on Pitbulls

Pack Leader | January 14th, 2009

pitbull dog

There are many horror stories out there that involve pit bull attacks. I mean they are breed to kill, right? Well, that is wrong. I want to educate people on this incredible, loving and smart breed of dog. It just breaks my heart to see that some cities are, actually banning this breed of dog.

Did you know that pit bulls were, actually breed to be nannies? Yes, they were breed to watch over children. In the 1940’s and 50’s they were referred to as “the nannies of America”. After all The Little Rascals had a pit bull and so did Helen Keller. Pit bulls were once loved family pets. The truth is that any dog can be an aggressive dog. Labs, Terriers and Retrievers are all on record for biting. So why is it that only Pit bulls are publicized for this? I believe it’s because no one wants to ruin the “good dog” reputation of these other breeds. There are thousands of pit bull breeds running around in America and when there are that many dogs there are bound to be bites. The truth is that statistically American Pit bulls are the least likely breed to bite.

Many famous people own pit bulls, as well. Like, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, General George Patton, Helen Keller, Jamie Foxx, Rachael Ray, Jon Stewart, Ken Howard, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Kevin Federline and Pink.

Not to mention there are many pit bulls that are famous themselves. Like, Sergeant Stubby, he is the most decorated dog in military history, and the only dog to have been promoted during battle. He fought for 18 months in the trenches of France during WW1 for 17 battles. He warned his fellow soldiers of gas attacks, located wounded soldiers, and listened for oncoming artillery rounds. He was even responsible for the capture of a German spy.
